Shedrick Mitchell, a name synonymous with the highest level of musicianship emerges from a 23-year hiatus following his first solo recording to offer a musical panacea that is most relevant for the times, “Time – Reflections – Distance.” A collection of hymns, this offering of solitude is an invitation to meditate, pray and distance oneself while the world makes way for a new normal.
“Time – Reflections – Distance”, Shedrick’s sophomore recording to be released June 2020, is a departure from his decades long career spanning over 200 recordings with icons including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Jay-Z, R-Kelly, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terrance Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Tom Wopat, Robert Randolph and many others. Why now? “Time – Reflections – Distance” represents a culmination of inspiration, influences and purpose that speaks to the challenges we all face today.
Shedrick Mitchell’s musical roots are deeply planted in Gospel/Christian music and yet extend far beyond to jazz and New Age. His influences are beautifully woven into a signature sound that brings light into darkness, healing to the broken-hearted and illuminates the soul.
The idea for “Time – Reflections – Distance” came in the stillness of Shedrick fighting the virus, himself. During his time of isolation, the gift of reflection brought clarity, which strengthened him in his process of healing. His hope is that this collection of songs will do the same for many more.
Following his recovery of COVID-19 and after having recorded “Time – Reflections – Distance”, Shedrick has a renewed appreciation for things so easily taken for granted: the many blessings of life, and of course the luxury of just being able to walk into a studio and make music.
