Hi! I’m a software engineering manager and musicologist. At Spotify, I provide servant leadership to teams that make algorithmic playlists, such as Discover Weekly and Daily Mix, and invent new music, podcast, and video listening and viewing formats such as AI DJ, AI Playlists, and foreground feeds. Over the last decade plus at Spotify I’ve managed teams in all parts of playlist creation and Spotify’s mobile home page. At The Echo Nest, I built systems for humans and machines to collaborate on creating music discovery experiences. At exfm, I built backend systems for social music discovery apps. In 2012, I started Monthly Music Hackathon to encourage several local New York City communities interested in music and technology to collaborate on generating new ideas and projects, which has since held more than 60 events serving 10s of thousands of people. Earlier, I spent several years building teams to develop networked video production infrastructure and research long-term preservation of digital video at the NYC PBS TV station. For more than 25 years, I’ve been writing software to analyze music and automate my music composition process, creating a novel model of music for each new work. I have degrees in music spanning musicology, composition, and performance with a specialty in the music of India.
My personal mission is to connect more diverse audiences with more diverse music and creators. My method for advancing this mission is to help teams and leaders who are passionate about it to achieve their goals.
